How Often Do Homes Need to Be Repiped?

The need for repiping depends largely on the age of the home, the type of piping material used, and overall water quality. In general, most homes need to be repiped every 40 to 70 years to ensure the plumbing system remains safe and reliable. Over time, all piping materials naturally degrade, but advancements in plumbing technology have made newer materials more durable and efficient than older ones. If your home is several decades old and hasn’t had a plumbing upgrade, it may be time to consider a professional evaluation.

Warning Signs Your Pipes Need to Be Replaced

While most piping systems are built to last for decades, they don’t last forever. Over time, wear and tear, corrosion, and outdated materials can lead to serious plumbing issues. Catching the warning signs early can help prevent water damage, costly repairs, and even health risks.

If you notice any of the following problems in your home, it may be time to consider repiping:

  • Frequent leaks - Constant water and gas leaks may point to widespread pipe deterioration.
  • Discolored or rusty water - Brown, yellow, or reddish water often signals corrosion inside your water line.
  • Low water pressure - Reduced flow could be caused by buildup, blockages, or failing pipe materials.
  • Visible corrosion or flaking - Pipes that show rust, stains, or flaking on the outside are likely breaking down internally as well.
  • Unusual noises in the plumbing - Banging, rattling, or whistling sounds may indicate pressure issues or pipe damage.
  • Water with a metallic taste or odor - This can be a sign of deteriorating metal pipes leaching into your water supply.
  • Pipes made from outdated materials - Homes with galvanized steel, lead, or polybutylene pipes are often due for an upgrade.

When your pipes start acting up, reach out to O'Connor Plumbing for a swift and dependable solution. Our team arrives in fully stocked service vehicles, ready to get to the bottom of the problem. We offer same-day and emergency plumbing services to be there for you when you need us.

FAQ

Find Answers To Your Questions
  • What can I put in my garbage disposal?
Garbage disposals are not macerators and will only break up soft debris. Mashed potatoes, cooked carrots, eggs etc. are ok to put in the disposal. Things like bones, coffee grounds, egg shells or any hard product will wear the blades and jam the disposal. You should always run water to the disposal to help break down the foods and flush through the drain. Call the professionals at O’Connor Plumbing for help with your disposal
  • Is it safe to use chemical drain cleaners?

Drain cleaners are very toxic. If you ever look on the back of the product you will notice at least 3 warning labels. These are not very good products to have laying around your house especially if you have kids or pets. These toxic chemicals are also very bad for your pipes, causing them to deteriorate from the inside out. If this happens your drain lines will need to be replaced. There are enzymes and friendly bacteria products that will keep grease and sludge from building up inside of your pipes.

If you have a clog please call the professionals at O’Connor Plumbing!

  • Why does the toilet keep running?
This is probably the most commonly asked plumbing question. In most cases it is caused by the flapper not closing on or making a proper seal around the flush valve. If the flapper is not closing, then jiggle the handle and that will normally fix the issue. If the flapper is worn out and not properly sealing, then you will have to have the flapper replaced. Either way if the flapper does not seal the water will leak into the toilet and the tank will not fill with water to push the float up and turn off the supply of water.
  • Do I need a tankless water heater?
Tankless water heaters, while at the front of technology, aren’t the solution for every house. Sometimes you are better off staying with your conventional heater. Here at O’Connor Plumbing we have tankless water heater experts that can provide you with a tankless or tank style heater that best suits your home.
