10 Warning Signs of a Plumbing Leak

Leaks can pose serious risks to your property and safety. Recognizing the warning signs early can help you take swift action to prevent damage or danger.

Here are common signs of water and gas leaks to watch out for:

  1. Unexplained increase in water bills - A sudden spike may indicate a hidden water leak.
  2. Damp or discolored spots - Water stains on walls, ceilings, or floors often point to leaking pipes.
  3. Musty odors or mold growth - Persistent moisture encourages mold, signaling a possible water leak.
  4. Dripping sounds - Hearing water dripping when no taps are running could mean a hidden leak.
  5. Low water pressure - Leaks can reduce water flow throughout your home.
  6. Pooling water or puddles - Visible water around pipes, fixtures, or in your yard is a clear sign of leakage.
  7. Unusual sulfur or rotten egg smell - This odor often indicates a natural gas leak and should be treated as an emergency.
  8. Hissing or whistling sounds near gas lines or appliances - These noises can signal escaping gas.
  9. Dead or dying vegetation near underground gas lines - Gas leaks can kill plants and grass in the affected area.
  10. Physical symptoms - Headaches, dizziness, nausea, or difficulty breathing when inside your home may suggest gas exposure.

FAQ

Find Answers To Your Questions
  • What can I put in my garbage disposal?
Garbage disposals are not macerators and will only break up soft debris. Mashed potatoes, cooked carrots, eggs etc. are ok to put in the disposal. Things like bones, coffee grounds, egg shells or any hard product will wear the blades and jam the disposal. You should always run water to the disposal to help break down the foods and flush through the drain. Call the professionals at O’Connor Plumbing for help with your disposal
  • Is it safe to use chemical drain cleaners?

Drain cleaners are very toxic. If you ever look on the back of the product you will notice at least 3 warning labels. These are not very good products to have laying around your house especially if you have kids or pets. These toxic chemicals are also very bad for your pipes, causing them to deteriorate from the inside out. If this happens your drain lines will need to be replaced. There are enzymes and friendly bacteria products that will keep grease and sludge from building up inside of your pipes.

  • Why does the toilet keep running?
This is probably the most commonly asked plumbing question. In most cases it is caused by the flapper not closing on or making a proper seal around the flush valve. If the flapper is not closing, then jiggle the handle and that will normally fix the issue. If the flapper is worn out and not properly sealing, then you will have to have the flapper replaced. Either way if the flapper does not seal the water will leak into the toilet and the tank will not fill with water to push the float up and turn off the supply of water.
  • Do I need a tankless water heater?
Tankless water heaters, while at the front of technology, aren’t the solution for every house. Sometimes you are better off staying with your conventional heater. Here at O’Connor Plumbing we have tankless water heater experts that can provide you with a tankless or tank style heater that best suits your home.
